Wrestling / 157 pounds / Senior / Westfield, N.J.
Steve Bonsall is a senior on the UChicago wrestling team. At the NCAA Upper Midwest Regional, Bonsall secured third place at 157 pounds to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships. He owns an overall record of 31-8 on the season.
Head Coach Leo Kocher: "Senior Steve Bonsall has once more punched his ticket to the NCAA Tournament this past weekend. No one pushes himself harder in our practices than Steve. As a consistently positive force on the team, no one performs better in the leadership role. His heart is among this NCAA All-American’s strongest assets."
Teammate Will Britain: "Steve is a great teammate and leader on and off the mat. Everybody on the team recognizes that Steve is the hardest-working guy in the room, and there is nobody more deserving of moving on to nationals. Off the mat, Steve is always studying or looking to spend time with teammates. He does a tremendous job helping our first-years adjust to the University and has helped to build a strong team culture. I am fortunate to work with Steve on a daily basis and could not ask for a better practice partner. He sets an excellent example of what it means to be a University of Chicago wrestler."
Other OOC Nominees
Cole Schmitz (Men's Basketball)
- Head Coach Mike McGrath: "In his last week of practice and game of his career, Cole exemplified the heart and spirit that he has shown throughout the course of his career. Cole cares so deeply about Maroons Basketball and his teammates that it seeps out of him all the time. This passion has been a large part of his success as a player and it has raised the play of his teammates and the team. It was a huge part of our victory on Senior Day versus WashU and will have a huge impact on the success of the team in the upcoming years."
