Majors: Public Policy and Statistics
Claire Brockway is a junior runner on the Maroon women's track & field team. At last weekend's University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor Championships, Brockway won the 5,000 meters in 17:41.41, then finished sixth in the 3,000 meters in a personal-record time of 10:09.04.
Head Coach Chris Hall: "Claire competed in two events this weekend (5,000 and 3,000 meter distances). The 5K was run at the end of day one and was a really great battle right to the finish. Claire took the lead in the race early (at 800 meters) and led pretty much the entire way until being passed with about 600 meters remaining. However, she stayed on the shoulder of the leader and with about 100 meters remaining, made her final charge to the front to win her first ever UAA title. On day two, she came back for the 3,000-meter run and sat further back in the race (much of the time not in scoring position). In the end, Claire ran a 10-second personal record and moved up to sixth in the event in what was a really impressive weekend of racing."
Teammate Abigial Shoemaker: "Claire has really been beyond impressive this year, stepping it up both in terms of fitness and leadership on the team. Having trained with her the past year and a half, I can say without a doubt she has been one of the hardest workers on the team. Seeing all that running, through both the frigid winter and miserable humid summers, pay off is truly inspiring. Even outside of running, she is a great role model, taking charge of the distance squad in the absence of a senior class. Whether hosting team dinners, making goody bags, or keeping a cool head throughout workouts, Claire is a great leader, runner, and friend, to both me and our entire distance family."
