Laura Darcey

Laura Darcey

Women's Track & Field / Jumps & Multis / Senior / Teddington, England

Major: Economics

Laura Darcey is a senior jumper on the UChicago women's track & field team. Darcey's career-best day at the Windy City Rumble saw her submit the No. 1 pentathlon score in the country (3,794 points), the No. 2 high jump (1.74 meters) and the No. 7 long jump (5.65 meters). Her pentathlon and high jump marks were both school records.

Head Coach Chris Hall: "Laura competed in the pentathlon on Friday and had lifetime-best performances in all five of the events. In the process, she set school records in both the high jump and the pentathlon. The pentathlon score is currently No. 1 in the nation (by a significant margin), her high jump is the No. 2 performance this year nationally and her long jump is currently the No. 7 best mark in the country so far this season. The overall performance was exceptional and all done on a pretty challenging week academically as well. Laura has been a special athlete on this team and nationally throughout her time at UChicago, but without a doubt she has risen to a new level this winter. She seems extremely focused on the day-to-day training and has really shined as a leader this winter as well."

Teammate Ella Parker: "Being Laura’s teammate is something anyone would be lucky to experience, and is something I feel privileged to have had during my time as an athlete at UChicago. Laura is inspiring in her commitment to success, her resilience in the face of injury and failure, and her ability to be both intensely competitive and intensely caring towards her teammates. High jump is an event that is frustrating in the highest degree. There are often weeks if not years between improvements, and many more days that feel like failures than those that feel like successes. More than anything, Laura has taught me the importance of finding successes in the times that feel like failures, and has brought a comfort and energy to my practices and competitions with her that I have yet to find elsewhere. For all she has done and will do on this team, we’re all incredibly grateful to have her!"
