Women's Cross Country / Junior / Eau Claire, Wis.
Majors: Mathematics and Physics
Sophia Smith is a junior runner on the Maroon women's cross country team. Smith placed sixth overall in the women's 6K race at the Benedictine University Invitational with a time of 23:08.8. UChicago has now won three-straight team races and four overall this season.
Head Coach Chris Hall: "Sophia is a junior on our team who has had some ups and downs over her first two years due to injury. She's always working really hard to perform at her best and this past weekend, she definitely had her best collegiate cross country race. We were holding out a number of our team members which gave some of our athletes that are not generally in scoring position (top 5) an opportunity to contribute to our team in a scoring fashion. Sophia seized the opportunity on Friday by beginning the race pretty aggressively and she simply never faltered. She placed sixth overall in the meet as our No. 4 runner and shattered her previous lifetime-best time by more than 20 seconds."
Teammate Zoe Smith: "It's been super exciting to see S'phia grow in confidence in her running throughout the season. She is a huge asset to our team, both on and off the course. Her unique style livens up our practices, while her consistent support helps us through our workouts. She is also great friend and role model, and I couldn't imagine running without her!"
