Women's Basketball / Forward / First-Year / Naperville, Ill.
Major: Molecular Engineering
Lucy Schmid is a first-year forward on the UChicago women's basketball team. Schmid made her collegiate debut last week and played in a pair of Maroon victories over Mount Mary University and Elmhurst College. She averaged 5.0 points and 2.5 rebounds per game.
Head Coach Carissa Sain: "Lucy has really had an amazing start to the season when you consider her circumstances. She started the season not fully cleared from her ACL reconstruction, but remained prepared as she worked towards clearance. Her fitness was perfectly on track, she learned from the sidelines at practice, she executed when she did have opportunities on the floor, she has been honest with the coaches, trainers, and doctors with how she’s feeling, and as a result, she’s put herself in position to immediately impact games the moment she was cleared.
When Lucy got on the floor for the first time in the Mount Mary game, her teammates were so excited for her. To watch them celebrate her baskets and rebounds was so fun, but also speaks volumes to what Lucy means to her teammates. She really has done a tremendous job navigating the challenges of returning to play while also settling into a new team!"
Teammate Nireet Dhillon: "I would say that Lucy has been incredibly supportive and positive in the whole process of returning from her injury, but also constantly giving her all in practice at the same time. And then to come in the last two games and get her first minutes of playing time this season and make an immediate impact, she crushed it!"
