UChicago Athletics Preview: Oct. 28-30

CHICAGO – Four University of Chicago varsity athletic teams hit the road for conference games this weekend, while volleyball and swimming & diving will host a pair of teams at the Ratner Athletics Center.


Women's Soccer

No. 6-ranked UChicago looks to create separation at the top of the University Athletic Association (UAA) standings with two road conference games at Case Western Reserve University and No. 18-ranked Carnegie Mellon University. The Maroons are currently tied for first in the UAA with Carnegie Mellon at 3-1. On Monday, sophomore midfielder Jenna McKinney was named UAA Offensive Athlete of the Week (3 goals, 1 assist in 2 games).

Men's Soccer

The No. 1-ranked Maroons put their perfect record on the line with a pair of road games against conference foes this weekend. UChicago plays at Case Western Reserve and No. 19-ranked Carnegie Mellon. Senior forward Brenton Desai (2 goals) and junior defender Stacey Reimann (1 assist) were named UAA Offensive and Defensive Athletes of the Week, respectively, on Monday.

Volleyball

UChicago will honor its four seniors on Senior Night in conjunction with Friday night's home matches against Dominican University and North Park University. The senior class is composed of middle hitter Katie LaPorte, outside hitter Amy Risk, setter Erin Risk and libero Mary Claire Tuohy. Over their four years on the team, the Maroons have reached the NCAA postseason three times and posted a record of 88-45 (.662 winning percentage).

Swimming & Diving

The Maroons host their second swimming & diving meet of the season with a tri-meet against Wheaton College and Boston College. On Saturday, UChicago took on NCAA Division I opponents Northwestern University and University of Illinois-Chicago, along with NAIA-member Olivet Nazarene University. The Maroons won four events on the day courtesy of a trio of freshmen – Reona Yamaguchi (100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke), Aaron Guo (1,000-yard freestyle) and Nicole Garcia (100-yard butterfly).

Football

UChicago football looks to get back into the win column with a road contest at Sewanee on Saturday. In their last meeting in 2015, the Maroons shut out the Tigers 31-0 at Stagg Field. Senior linebacker Jackson Garrey forced his seventh career fumble last Saturday at Hendrix College to set a new school record. UChicago's offense has totaled at least 450 yards of total offense in five of the past six games.

Cross Country

The Maroon cross country teams embark to Emory University for the annual UAA Championships at McIntosh Reserve Park in Whitesburg, Ga. Last year, both the men's and women's team finished third in the eight-team meet. Returning All-UAA recipients include junior Khia Kurtenbach (2nd place) and junior Peter Kreuch (9th place).
