UChicago Athletics Preview: Nov. 12-13

CHICAGO – Postseason action begins this weekend for the University of Chicago soccer teams, who are each hosting the opening two rounds of the NCAA Division III Championship. Football will play its season finale at home versus rival Washington University-St. Louis, cross country heads to Wisconsin for the NCAA Midwest Regional and wrestling competes at the Trine University Invitational.


Women's Soccer

No. 11-ranked UChicago qualified for the NCAA postseason for the fourth-straight year and will host a four-team regional pod with Webster University (13-7), Augsburg College (17-4) and Milwaukee School of Engineering (17-3-1). UChicago will open with Webster on Saturday while Augsburg will play MSOE. The winners will face off on Sunday in the regional final.

Earlier this season, the Maroons defeated MSOE 5-1. UChicago previously played Webster and Augsburg in the opening rounds of the 2014 NCAA Championship, winning those matches 1-0 and 3-0, respectively.


Football

The Maroons conclude their season at home against Washington-St. Louis on Saturday afternoon. It will be UChicago's Senior Day, which will feature recognition of the 17 seniors before kickoff.

The game will feature two of the top offenses in NCAA Division III. The Maroons rank 29th in total offense (474 yards per game) while the Bears are 19th in that category (491.8 YPG). UChicago senior quarterback Burke Moser ranks second in the nation in passing yards (3,311) and WashU quarterback J.J. Tomlin is sixth (3,056).

Wrestling

The Maroons will participate in their first invitational of the season at Trine University on Saturday. At last year's meet, UChicago finished third out of nine teams. The Maroons had two weight class champions on the afternoon and a trio of third-place finishers. Nick Ferraro ran through the 165-pound bracket with a perfect 4-0 mark. He won the title match via major decision, 13-5. Louis Demarco earned his first collegiate tournament title at 125 pounds. He prevailed 8-3 in the semifinal and 7-4 in the final.

Cross Country

A return trip to the national meet is at stake for UChicago with the final race of the regular season at the NCAA Midwest Regional, hosted by University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. The Maroon women have reached the NCAA Division III Championship for six-straight seasons, while UChicago's men are seeking their third bid in the past four years. At last year's NCAA Midwest Regional, the women placed third out of 40 teams and the men took seventh out of 38 teams.

Men's Soccer

No. 1-ranked Maroons will serve as host this weekend of a three-team regional to open the NCAA Division III Championship tournament. UChicago is the overall top seed in the national bracket and received a first-round bye. They will play on Sunday versus the winner of the first-round match – University of Dubuque or Westminster College (Mo.). The Maroons have qualified for the postseason for the third-straight year and have reached the second round in each of those seasons.
