UChicago Athletics Preview: Sept. 25 – Oct. 1

Women's Soccer

The No. 1-ranked Maroons (8-0 record) will play regional rival Wheaton College (3-3-2) on Tuesday before opening up conference play at University of Rochester (5-1-1) on Saturday afternoon.

UChicago ascended to the top position in Tuesday's United Soccer Coaches and D3soccer.com national polls. Sophomore midfielder Hanna Watkins has scored a goal in three-consecutive contests, while sophomore defender Mackenzie Peebles has recorded an assist in four of the past five games. In the first half of games this season, the Maroons have not allowed a goal and have outshot opponents 108-9 in that period.

Men's Soccer

No. 1-ranked UChicago (8-0 record) takes on Benedictine University (6-3) on the road Wednesday night and then travels to Rochester (5-1-2) for the University Athletic Association (UAA) opener.

Junior forward Max Lopez has scored at least one goal in seven out of eight games played this season. The Maroons have produced 29 goals this year, with 21 occurring in the second half of games. Sophomore defender Sam Drablos has tallied three header goals this season.

The Maroons (11-3 record) will celebrate Senior Night on Thursday with a dual versus Wheaton (3-9). The UAA Round Robin #1 officially kicks off on the weekend in Cleveland, Ohio as UChicago squares off with Brandeis University (7-3), University of Rochester (9-5) and Emory University (11-1).

Junior outside hitter Audrey Scrafford and freshman setter Emma Griffith were both named to the Illinois Wesleyan University Classic All-Tournament Team. They were picked as UAA Athletes of the Week on Monday. Scrafford is averaging 4.3 kills per set over the past five matches.

Men's Tennis

UChicago looks to make a statement at the ITA Central Regional Championships, hosted this weekend by Kalamazoo College.

In last year's ITA Central Regional, the Maroons swept the singles (David Liu) and doubles titles (Tyler Raclin and Max Hawkins). UChicago advanced three doubles teams and three singles players to their semifinals. A Maroon has won the Central Region singles title for three-straight years.

Cross Country

After a two-week break from competition, the Maroons will test their legs at the Olivet Nazarene University Midwest Intercollegiate on Friday. The women's 6K begins at 5:00 PM, followed by the men's 8K at 5:45 PM.

UChicago's women have finished first and third in their opening two meets, while the men have taken second and fifth. The underclassmen have performed well on the men's side, accounting for six out of the team's top seven placers at both the St. Francis Invite and Vic Godfrey Open.

UChicago (1-2 record) returns home to Stagg Field for a Saturday afternoon matchup with Cornell College (2-1).

Freshman defensive Jackson Ross (seven tackles, one sack, two tackles for loss) was picked as UAA Defensive Athlete of the Week on Monday. With his 142-yard effort last Saturday, senior running back Chandler Carroll now has 12 games with at least 100 rushing yards in his career. After converting 17 percent of their third downs in the opening two weeks, the Maroons went 9-for-18 against Illinois College.
