UChicago Athletics Preview: Oct. 2-8

Men's Tennis

UChicago closes out the ITA Central Region Championships by hosting the singles final featuring sophomore Erik Kerrigan versus freshman Jeremy Yuan. Match time is set for 3:15 PM at the Stagg Tennis Courts.

Over the weekend, the Maroons dominated the ITA Central Regional with four semifinalists in singles and three semifinalists in doubles. UChicago has swept the ITA Central Region singles and doubles titles for four-straight years. The duo of Yuan and sophomore Tyler Raclin won the doubles title over Washington University – St. Louis and were picked as University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week on Monday.

Men's Soccer

The No. 1-ranked Maroons (10-0, 1-0 UAA) are scheduled to play a Tuesday night match at Carroll University (2-8-1) before continuing their UAA slate with a Saturday home contest with Emory University (7-2, 1-0 UAA).

Junior forward Matthew Koh was the UAA Offensive Athlete of the Week after posting two goals and three assists in a pair of wins over University of Rochester and Benedictine University. Junior forward Max Lopez has scored at least one goal in nine out of 10 games played this season. The Maroons are averaging 3.6 goals per game.


Women's Soccer

Top-ranked UChicago (10-0, 1-0 UAA) returns home for a pair of matches, with a Wednesday contest against Kalamazoo College (6-5) and a Saturday afternoon UAA bout with No. 21-ranked Emory (6-3, 0-1 UAA).

The Maroon offense is averaging 3.8 goals per game and has beaten nine opponents by at least two goals this season. Defensively, they have allowed six shots or less in every contest, while averaging 26.4 shots taken per game. Junior midfielder Jenna McKinney has tallied at least one point in eight of 10 games played.



The No. 25-ranked Maroons (15-3 record) look to extend their winning streak at the Elmhurst College Quadrangular. They take on Otterbein University (17-1) on Friday and host Elmhurst (5-9) on Saturday.

UChicago has won nine matches in-a-row and has only dropped three sets in that time. The Maroons got off to a 3-0 start at UAA Round Robin #1, including a 3-1 win over No. 3-ranked Emory. Junior outside hitter Audrey Scrafford was picked as UAA Offensive Athlete of the Week on Monday for the second time this season. The team's .237 hitting percentage is its highest since the 2007 season.

Cross Country

UChicago reaches the midpoint of its season this Saturday at the Lucian Rosa Invitational. The women's 6K race begins at 10:00 AM and the men's 8K starts at 11:00 AM.

The Maroon women are coming off a team title at the Illinois Intercollegiates last weekend, in which senior Khia Kurtenbach was the individual medalist. She has finished in the top three individually in all three races. Freshman Ryan Cutter was the top placer for the men for the third-straight race as well.

The Maroons (2-2 record) begin conference play within the Midwest Conference North Division against Lawrence University (1-3) at Stagg Field on Saturday afternoon.

Junior safety Jeremy Vincent was picked as UAA and MWC Defensive Athlete of the Week on Monday after picking off two passes versus Cornell College. The Maroons forced eight turnovers in the game and the defense ranks second in the nation with 17 turnovers this season. The special teams unit has blocked four kicks this year, which is tied for fifth in NCAA Division III.
