UChicago Athletics Preview: Nov. 13-19


UChicago takes on its first dual match opponent on Tuesday night when the Maroons travel to Elmhurst College (1-0 record). Then they head out for invitational action at the 25th-annual Concordia University (Wis.) Open on Saturday.

The Maroons kicked off their season last weekend by finishing seventh out of 11 teams at the Trine University Invitational. UChicago entered 10 freshmen and two sophomores at the meet. First-years Jason Crary (157 pounds), Will Hare (285 pounds), and Quinton Mincy (197 pounds) all took fourth place in their respective weight classes.

Women's Basketball

UChicago makes its 2017-18 season debut on Wednesday night at Lake Forest College. The team returns home for the Midway Classic on Saturday and Sunday with matchups against No. 25-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University and Colorado College.

The Maroons are coming off a 19-8 record in 2016-17. They took second place in the University Athletic Association (UAA) at 11-3 and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time in program history. UChicago reached the second round, knocking off Wartburg College in the opener.

Women's Soccer

The No. 3-ranked Maroons (19-1 record) continue their postseason hosting duties for the NCAA Round of 16 and Quarterfinals this weekend. UChicago will play Wheaton College (15-4-3) on Friday in the four-team sectional. Washington University-St. Louis (17-1-1) takes on University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (19-1-3) on Friday afternoon. The winners will face off on Saturday at 1:00 PM with a trip to the NCAA semifinals on the line.

UChicago shut out both of its opponents in the opening two rounds of the postseason, topping St. Catherine University 3-0 and Hope College 4-0. The Maroons have blanked 15 opponents this year.


Men's Soccer

No. 7-ranked UChicago (18-2 record) will host a four-team postseason pod for the second weekend in-a-row. On Friday evening, the Maroons play No. 1-ranked Calvin College (21-0-1), followed by Emory University (14-5-1) versus University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (17-2-1). The winners will compete on Saturday at 7:00 PM for a spot in the NCAA semifinals.

Last weekend, the Maroons dispatched Lake Forest College 6-2 and Capital University 2-0 in the NCAA first and second rounds. Junior forward Matthew Koh scored both second-half goals in the Capital match.


Swimming & Diving

The Maroons return to action with the three-day Phoenix Fall Classic at the Myers-McLoraine Pool. The schedule includes a 6:00 PM start on Friday, with Saturday sessions at 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM, and Sunday sessions at 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

Two weeks ago, UChicago split a home dual meet with Washington-St. Louis. Sophomore diver Agnes Lo broke the school record in the women's one-meter dive. She currently owns three of the four program diving records.

Women's Cross Country

UChicago caps its season at the NCAA Division III Championship on Saturday afternoon. Principia College will be the host at the North Farm Cross Country Course in Elsah, Ill.

The Maroons placed fifth at the NCAA Midwest Regional last weekend as senior Khia Kurtenbach earned individual medalist honors for the second-straight year. This is UChicago's eighth-straight team appearance at the NCAA national, where it took 25th place in 2016.


Men's Basketball

The Maroons kick off the season as hosts of the Midway Classic this weekend. Their opponents are Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Saturday and Trinity (Texas) University on Sunday.

UChicago concluded the 2016-17 campaign with a 16-9 record and a fourth-place finish in the UAA. The Maroons set new school records for points in a season, team field-goal percentage (.496) and free throws attempted (627).
