CHICAGO – Four University of Chicago student-athletes earned recognition from the University Athletic Association (UAA) as Athletes of the Week on Monday.
Olariche Obi captured the weekly honor in women's basketball. The junior power forward submitted a pair of dominating road performances over the weekend, helping the No. 19-ranked Maroons defeat Emory University 79-61 and No. 7-ranked University of Rochester 74-59. She tallied 22.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 4.5 steals per game while shooting 59.4 percent from the field. Obi has tallied 10 double-doubles on the season so far. UChicago took sole possession of first place in the UAA at 7-0 and are riding a 14-game win streak.
Steve Bonsall was the UAA Wrestler of the Week after an impressive showing at the Wheaton College Pete Willson Invitational. In a field that included 38 teams, the sophomore finished in third place at 157 pounds with a 6-1 record. He won the third-place match over the No. 2 seed with a dominating 16-1 technical fall. Bonsall's season record now stands at 17-3.
The Maroons went on to sweep the UAA Men's and Women's Tennis Athletes of the Week. In a home matchup versus NCAA Division II opponent Lewis University, UChicago's men won 7-2 and the women were victorious 5-4. Sophomore Ninan Kumar picked up a pair of victories at No. 5 singles (6-1, 6-1) and No. 2 doubles alongside senior teammate Nicolas Chua (8-4). For the women, first-year Catherine Xu came out on top at No. 3 singles and No. 3 doubles. Her three-set singles marathon – 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (7-3) – helped her team clinch the narrow victory.
