UChicago Athletics Preview: Feb. 19-25


The UChicago wrestling team travels north to the two-day NCAA Upper Midwest Regional, hosted by Augsburg College, on Friday and Saturday. The top three finishers at each weight class will advance to the NCAA nationals.

Last season, the Maroons finished eighth in the 16-team regional field. Four UChicago wrestlers earned spots in the semi-finals of their respective weight classes. Sophomore Steve Bonsall finished third at 157 pounds to qualify for nationals, where he then placed eighth to become the Maroons' first All-American since 2014.

Men's Tennis

The No. 9-ranked Maroons are set to participate in the three-day ITA Division III National Team Indoor Championship, hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College. UChicago is the No. 4-seed in the eight-team field. Its first match on Friday comes against No. 5-seed Carnegie Mellon University.

UChicago has reached the ITA Indoor final in each of the last two years, claiming second place both times. Last weekend, the Maroons earned a pair of 9-0 wins against DePauw University and Coe College to pick up their third and fourth shutouts of the year. Senior Luke Tsai has won 13-straight singles matches.

Swimming & Diving

UChicago will host the two-day Midwest Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the Myers-McLoraine Pool.

At last year's Midwest Invite, the Maroon women placed first and the men took second as the two squads combined for five event victories. UChicago is coming off a fourth-place showing at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships. The men swept the breaststroke events with sophomores Reona Yamaguchi and Lance Culjat, while first-year Keda Song was picked as the UAA Men's Rookie of the Year.

Women's Basketball

The No. 10-ranked Maroons (22-2 record, 13-0 UAA) close out the regular season on Saturday at home against conference rival Washington University – St. Louis (18-6, 9-4 UAA). The team will celebrate Senior Day and recognize Madison Dunbar and Elizabeth Nye.

UChicago dominated last weekend, defeating Carnegie Mellon University 70-51 on Friday and Case Western Reserve University 73-35 on Sunday. The victories extended UChicago's winning streak to 20 games – the third-longest in school history. With a win on Saturday, the Maroons would clinch the seventh perfect conference record in UAA history. The team also went 14-0 in the UAA in 2011 and 2012.

Men's Basketball

UChicago's final game of the season pits the hosts against No. 2 Washington University – St. Louis (22-2, 13-0 UAA) on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons (12-12 record, 8-5 UAA) will honor Collin Barthel, Jake Fenlon, Ryan Shearmire and Porter Veach for Senior Day.

Last weekend, UChicago beat Carnegie Mellon and Case Western Reserve by an average of 18 points. The Maroons have now won eight UAA games for the fifth-straight season. Barthel has been on a tear in February, averaging 20.5 points. He has shot 56.3 percent from the field this month and 33-of-35 from the free throw line (94 percent).

Indoor Track & Field

The Maroons will head to Cleveland this weekend for the UAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. The two-day event begins on Saturday afternoon.

At last year's UAA Indoor Championships, UChicago's women took second place and the men were third. The squads combined to win seven events and compiled 17 All-UAA performances. Returning conference champions include senior Khia Kurtenbach (5,000 meters), sophomore Alisha Harris (long jump), junior Alexandra Thompson (high jump), senior Patrick LeFevre (55-meter hurdles), senior Nathan Downey (200 meters) and sophomore Alexander Scott (shot put).

UChicago's baseball team will open the 2018 season with two Sunday games in Missouri against host Fontbonne University (1-2) and Dominican University.

The Maroons have increased their winning percentage in each of the last three seasons, culminating in a 22-15 mark last year. UChicago boasted one of NCAA Division III's best offenses in 2017, ranking 11th nationally with a .334 batting average and 22nd with a .412 on-base percentage. Three players earned All-Region honors – senior outfielder Maximiliano Larsen, junior outfielder Connor Hickey and junior catcher Ian Bohn.
