UChicago Athletics Preview: March 26 – April 1


UChicago returns to Illinois for a doubleheader at Lake Forest College (9-5) on Monday, then heads out to Missouri for a four-game series at Washington University – St. Louis (5-5).

The Maroons kicked off the season with a 7-5 mark during their annual spring break trip to Florida. Junior first base Carly Schulz was the top hitter with a .459 batting average, while sophomore catcher Holli Jones was close behind at .429. Junior outfielder Maeve Garvey drove in 11 runs with a .381 batting average.

Track & Field

The outdoor track and field season commences on Thursday as the Maroons travel to Augustana College for the Viking Olympics.

UChicago concluded the indoor season with five All-American performances at the NCAA Division III Championships. For the men, sophomore Joe Previdi was national runner-up in the 800 meters and senior Nathan Downey was sixth in the pole vault. For the women, sophomore Laura Darcey took fifth in the high jump and sixth in the pentathlon, while junior Nicole VacaGuzman placed eighth in the 400 meters.

UChicago (7-6 record) is scheduled to take on Illinois College (7-4) in a Saturday doubleheader down in Jacksonville, Ill.

In last week's road trip to Texas, the Maroons went 2-3 with wins over University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and Southwestern University. Junior outfielder Connor Hickey hit for a .391 batting average during the southern swing, while first-year infielder James Kelly batted .353. Junior pitcher Ravi Bakhai struck out nine batters in five innings of relief.
