UChicago Athletics Preview: April 10-15

The Maroons (12-7 record) have a slate of local games this week. UChicago will take on Illinois Institute of Technology (9-11) on Tuesday evening before hosting Finlandia University (4-12) for a pair of doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday.

Last weekend, UChicago notched two wins on Saturday over Central (Iowa) College by scores of 5-4 and 11-4. The opening contest came to an exciting conclusion as first-year shortstop Brian Lyle laid a bunt down the third-base line that brought the winning run home from third base. The squeeze play is the second time in two years that the Maroons have won on a walk-off bunt: outfielder Connor Hickey did the same to Finlandia on April 9, 2017.

UChicago (11-7 record) will continue its eight-game home stand this week. On Thursday afternoon, the Maroons face Aurora University (12-8) in a make-up doubleheader. Saturday will bring two more contests against University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (9-7).

The team kicked off its first home stand with an offensive explosion against North Park University last Monday. Although the visitors leapt to a four-run lead in the top of the first, UChicago racked up 12 unanswered runs to end the contest after five innings. The home bats stayed hot in the second game of the day, setting up an 8-4 victory. The Maroons' three home runs on the afternoon – from junior Maeve Garvey, sophomore Emma Nelson, and first-year Skye Collins – equaled last year's season total and brought this year's count up to five.

UChicago will close out the weekend against University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (13-6) on Sunday.

It will be the Maroon men's first action since their spring break trip to California in March, where they faced a trio of ranked opponents.
