UChicago Athletics Preview: May 10-13

Outdoor Track & Field

UChicago will compete in the Dr. Keeler Invitational at North Central College on Thursday and Friday.

Last Friday, the Maroons claimed five event titles and 23 top-five finishes at the Dr. Tucker Open hosted by Loras College. For the women, winners were junior Nicole VacaGuzman in the 400 meters, senior Cassidy McPherson in the 800 meters and senior Angel Fluet in the pole vault. The men took two, with senior Jacob Amiri and sophomore Tim Koenning racing to victory in the 1,500 meters and 5,000 meters, respectively. Twelve women finished in the top five, with five runner-up finishes; the men placed 11 in the top five with two runners-up.

Men's Tennis

The No. 7-ranked Maroons (16-4 record) host a five-team regional to kick off the NCAA Division III Championship this weekend. UChicago received a first-round bye and will play either Augustana College or John Carroll University on Saturday morning.

Women's Tennis

No. 10-ranked UChicago (17-4 record) returns to the NCAA Division III Championship field, heading out on the road to University of Wisconsin-Whitewater for a seven-team regional. With a first-round bye in hand, the Maroons' opening opponent will be either Grinnell College or Coe College.

Baseball

The Maroons (26-10 record) conclude the regular season with a three-game series at No. 20-ranked Case Western Reserve University (26-10). After a Saturday afternoon doubleheader, the teams will meet again for a third contest on Sunday.

UChicago kept busy last week, winning four of its five games. After a 6-3 loss against Division I opponent University of Illinois-Chicago on Tuesday, the Maroons swept four games in Iowa, defeating Luther College once and hosts Grinnell College three times. The offense put on a show over the weekend, as UChicago plated 45 runs in 29 innings. With their 26th victory of the year, the Maroons tied the program record for most wins in a season, a mark set in 2001. First-year David Clarke also set a new single-season record after notching his seventh save in a 5-4 win over Grinnell. His tally already places him sixth on UChicago's career saves list.
