UChicago Athletics Preview: September 17-23

Volleyball

No. 19-ranked UChicago (12-1 record) faces a slate of four matches this week. After traveling to No. 1-ranked Calvin College (10-0) on Tuesday night, the squad heads out to Bloomington, Ill. on the weekend for the Illinois Wesleyan University Classic. The tournament pits the Maroons against No. 6-ranked Trinity (Texas) University (10-2) and Texas Lutheran University (4-8) on Friday before a Saturday morning meeting with Williams College (5-2).

Last week, UChicago defeated two nationally-ranked opponents, but also dropped its first match of the season as the team compiled a 4-1 record over five matches. The ranked wins came by 3-1 margins over No. 11 Illinois Wesleyan and No. 19 Carthage College. Sophomore setter Emma Griffith and junior middle hitter Madison Pearson were named to the Carthage All-Tournament Team, and Griffith was picked as University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week.

Men's Soccer

Second-ranked UChicago (6-0-1 record) wraps up a four-game home stand versus Carroll University (0-6-1) on Wednesday night before a trip to Calvin College (6-0) on Saturday evening.

Three emphatic home wins came from last week's contests as the Maroons dispatched Wheaton College, Macalester College and Loras College without conceding a goal while scoring nine of their own. Senior forward Matthew Koh scored once in each match and tied the school record for career assists with his 27th against Macalester. He was named UAA Offensive Athlete of the Week on Monday, and sophomore goalkeeper Aaron Katsimpalis was named UAA Defensive Athlete of the Week.

Women's Soccer

The third-ranked Maroons (5-0-1 record) will take on North Central College (4-2) at Stagg Field on Thursday afternoon before a weekend away fixture against Calvin College (4-1-1).

The Maroons remained unbeaten last week but settled for a 1-1 home draw against No. 15 Hope College on Wednesday. The hosts fell behind early before senior Jenna McKinney equalized in the 15th minute. UChicago had no difficulty finding the back of the net on Sunday, however, defeating University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh 4-0 with McKinney scoring twice. The newest UAA Offensive Player of the Week is riding a four-game point streak.

Women's Tennis

UChicago travels to Kalamazoo College this weekend to compete in the annual ITA Central Regional.

At last year's ITA Regional, Claire Handa and Marjorie Antohi were singles finalists, with Handa emerging with the title. The Maroons have captured the central region singles title in eight of the last 10 years, and four doubles crowns captured in that same time frame.

Football

The Maroons (0-2 record) come out of their bye week looking for their first win of the season on Saturday against Illinois College (0-2) at Stagg Field.

Men's Tennis

UChicago opens the 2018-19 campaign at the Western Michigan Invitational in Kalamazoo, Mich.

The 2017-18 season was the most successful in program history, as the Maroons captured their first UAA title with a 7-2 victory over Emory University and reached the NCAA semifinals for the third time in four years. This year, however, the team must replace five players from an exceptionally talented graduating class that included two All-Americans. Returning All-Americans include Erik Kerrigan, Jeremy Yuan, Tyler Raclin and Ninan Kumar.
