CHICAGO – University of Chicago's Jackson Ross and Nicco Capotosto were selected as Athletes of the Week by the Midwest Conference and the University Athletic Association, respectively, on Monday afternoon.
Ross was the MWC Football Defensive Athlete of the Week following a career-best performance in Saturday's 35-6 victory over Ripon College on Homecoming. The sophomore nose tackle anchored the defensive line with career highs of 17 tackles and three sacks versus Ripon's triple-option attack. He spearheaded a Maroon defensive effort that limited the No. 3-ranked rushing offense in the nation to 235 yards – more than 95 yards below their average. The Red Hawks only scored six points after posting 43.3 points on average entering Saturday's contest.
From his central defensive midfielder position, Capotosto's weekend efforts were rewarded with UAA Men's Soccer Defensive Athlete of the Week. The senior constantly foiled the opposing offenses with his positioning, tackling and passing, which led to a pair of shutout victories against New York University and Brandeis University. The Maroons only allowed six shots on goal total in the two contests, and the squad currently leads the UAA with three goals allowed in conference action. Capotosto also assisted on the second goal in the Brandeis game.
