UChicago Athletics Preview: November 12-18

Women's Basketball

No. 7-ranked UChicago (2-0 record) makes its home debut at the 2018 Midway Classic. Heidelberg University (1-0) and MIT (2-0) will be coming to the Ratner Athletics Center for weekend action starting on Friday evening.

The Maroons knocked off No. 10-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University 77-76 on the road last weekend, with senior guard Jamie Kockenmeister scoring the go-ahead layup in the final minute. Junior forward Taylor Lake was picked as University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week after putting up 16.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.5 steals per game on 52 percent shooting from the field.

Swimming & Diving

The Maroons will host the 10th-annual Phoenix Fall Classic this Friday through Sunday, with 12 teams in attendance. Friday will feature an evening finals session, while Saturday and Sunday will have morning and evening sessions.

Two weeks earlier, UChicago women topped Washington University – St. Louis and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a tri-meet, while the Maroon men beat CMS and lost to WashU. The Maroon women's divers swept the top three spots on both boards, totaling five NCAA provisional qualifying scores. Junior Agnes Lo broke her own school record in the one-meter dive (302.80).

UChicago continues its season-opening slate of invitationals at Concordia University (Wis.) on Saturday.

The Maroons captured five weight classes at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Invite last week. Sophomore Will Britain won the 165-pound title, scoring 45 points in his three matches. Junior Steve Bonsall outscored his three opponents 29-4 en route to a 157-pound championship.

Cross Country

The Maroons conclude the season on Saturday at the NCAA Division III Championships, hosted by University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. The women's 6K race begins at 11:15 AM followed by the men's 8K race at 12:15 PM.

The UChicago women have qualified for the national meet as a team for nine-straight years. The Maroon men have qualified nine times overall, with their last team appearance in 2015. Last year, Khia Kurtenbach captured the national championship in the women's race. At last week's NCAA Midwest Regional, UChicago totaled seven All-Region runners.

Men's Soccer

No. 3-ranked UChicago (16-2-1 record) continues its postseason run by hosting the NCAA third and fourth rounds on the Stagg Field turf this weekend. The Maroons take on No. 5-ranked Trinity University Texas (17-1-3) for the second time this season, while the other match features No. 18-ranked Luther College (18-3-1) versus University of St. Thomas (16-3-2). The winners will play each other on Sunday afternoon.

Men's Basketball

The Maroons (0-1 record) play their first home games at Ratner Athletics Center as hosts of the 2018 Midway Classic on Saturday and Sunday. The four-team tourney includes Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Ohio Wesleyan University and Springfield College (2-0).

In the season-opener at Illinois Wesleyan, sophomore forward Dominic Laravie established new career highs with 19 points and nine rebounds. The Maroons shot 53 percent from the field and made 7 of 17 three-pointers (41 percent).
