CHICAGO – A standout weekend on campus resulted in four University of Chicago selections among Monday's University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week.
UChicago men's soccer snagged both UAA Offensive and Defensive Athletes of the Week honors. The No. 3-ranked Maroons hosted the third and fourth round of the NCAA Division III Championship and emerged with a pair of wins over No. 5-ranked Trinity University (Texas) and No. 13-ranked Luther College. The squad advanced to the NCAA Final Four for the second-straight year.
Max Lopez scored all three goals on the Stagg Field turf, posting a brace against Trinity and the game-winning strike in overtime versus Luther. The senior forward leads the team in scoring with 16 goals and six assists in 21 games.
Senior midfielder Nicco Capotosto spearheaded the defensive effort in the midfield as the Maroons blanked both their opponents. UChicago outshot the opposition by a 48-18 margin, and only allowed one shot in the second half of both games. Trinity came into the weekend ranked fifth in the nation with 3.68 goals per game. The Maroon defense has racked up 12 shutouts this season.
Byrne Litschgi's historic performances were recognized with UAA Men's Swimmer of the Week accolades. At the three-day Phoenix Fall Classic, Litschgi set new school records in the 100-yard backstroke (48.50) and 200-yard backstroke (1:45.07). The 200 back was a pool record and the time bettered last year's NCAA champion's mark. He also had a NCAA B-cut in the 100-yard butterfly (49.27) and was on all four relays that achieved B-cuts.
The UAA Women's Diver of the Week was Agnes Lo. The junior swept both boards at the Phoenix Fall Classic. She claimed NCAA provisional qualifying marks in the one-meter dive (470.20) and three-meter dive (435.35).
