UChicago Athletics Preview: January 14-20

UChicago returns from its winter break with a pair of meets this weekend. First, the Maroons host a triangular with Lewis University and Olivet Nazarene University on Friday night. Then on Saturday afternoon, UChicago will travel to take on NCAA Division I opponent University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

The Maroons were last in action in mid-November as both the men and women won the Phoenix Fall Classic, where they compiled 32 NCAA B-cuts, three school records and two pool records. In last year's matchup with Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the UChicago men emerged victorious 152-134 for their first-ever dual victory against a NCAA Division I opponent.

Women's Basketball

The No. 13-ranked Maroons (11-3 overall, 2-1 UAA) make their first University Athletic Association (UAA) road trip of the season. UChicago goes to Brandeis University (6-7, 2-1 UAA) on Friday and New York University (8-4, 1-2 UAA) on Sunday.

The squad snapped a two-game skid by powering past University of Rochester 63-44 and outlasting Emory University 60-56 last weekend. Junior forward Taylor Lake averaged 17 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game while shooting 50 percent from the field. Rochester and Emory were limited to a combined field-goal percentage of .359.

Men's Basketball

UChicago (10-4 overall, 3-0 UAA) will also hit the road in conference play with a Friday night contest at Brandeis (9-5, 2-1 UAA) and a Sunday afternoon game at NYU (6-8, 0-3 UAA).

Last weekend, the Maroons beat No. 12-ranked University of Rochester 85-80 and Emory University 96-86 in overtime. Junior guard Cole Schmitz was named UAA Athlete of the Week on Monday after averaging 19.5 points on 64 percent shooting from the field. Over their last six games, UChicago is averaging 85.7 points and 12.2 three-pointers made per contest.

No. 20-ranked UChicago (6-3 record) hosts Elmhurst College (4-3) on Saturday afternoon for a dual meet.

UChicago has four College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) teams on its dual meet schedule this season – Wheaton College (W 26-14), North Central College (L 22-15), Elmhurst (January 19) and Augustana College (February 1). Junior Kyle Peisker was picked as UAA Athlete of the Week on Monday after winning the 174-pound title at Elmhurst's Al Hanke Invitational. In last year's bout with Elmhurst, UChicago captured a 31-9 victory.
