UChicago Athletics Preview: February 18-24

Wrestling

UChicago will take part in the two-day NCAA Division III Upper Midwest Regional on Friday and Saturday. University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire will serve as host for the 17-team regional. The top three individual finishers in each of the 10 weight class brackets qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships.

The Maroons are coming off their 17th University Athletic Association (UAA) team title. They routed New York University 36-3 and Case Western Reserve University 34-6 on February 9. Seven UChicago wrestlers were named All-UAA – senior Louis DeMarco (133 pounds), junior Steve Bonsall (157 pounds), junior Kahlan Lee-Lermer (165 pounds), first-year Ben Sarasin (174 pounds), junior Kyle Peisker (184 pounds), junior Nick Carola (197 pounds) and senior Patrick Mulkerin (285 pounds).

Men's Tennis

The No. 3-ranked Maroons (6-0 record) are the top overall seed at the eight-team Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Indoor Championship, hosted by Case Western Reserve University. The three-day weekend tournament starts with an opening match versus No. 18-ranked Case Western Reserve (4-0 record).

At last year's ITA Indoors, UChicago took third place after facing three UAA opponents. The Maroons beat Carnegie Mellon University 6-3, lost to Emory University 5-4 and beat Washington University – St. Louis 5-4. Charlie Pei provided the clincher win at No. 6 singles versus WashU with a 7-6, 7-6 score line.

Swimming & Diving

UChicago hosts its final regular-season swim meet of the year with the Midwest Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

Last weekend, the Maroon women finished second and the men placed third at the eight-team UAA Championships in the Myers-McLoraine Pool. Junior Agnes Lo was the UAA Women's Diver of the Year with her record-breaking wins on the one-meter and three-meter boards. UChicago has captured seven of the last 10 UAA Women's Diver of the Year awards.

Indoor Track & Field

The Maroons head to Brandeis University for the UAA Indoor Championships on Saturday and Sunday.

UChicago's women won last year's UAA indoor team title, defeating Washington-St. Louis 138-129. Laura Darcey was picked as the UAA Most Outstanding Performer in field events following her wins in the high jump and long jump. All told, the Maroons have captured seven indoor UAA team titles (five women, two men). Junior Alexander Scott ranks atop the conference in the men's shot put (16.26 meters) and weight throw (16.33 meters).

Women's Lacrosse

UChicago makes its program debut at home on Saturday versus DePauw University on the Stagg Field turf.

Women's Basketball

The No. 22-ranked Maroons (19-5 overall, 10-3 UAA) conclude the regular season schedule with a Saturday road game at Washington – St. Louis (18-6, 12-1 UAA).

UChicago will look to bolster its resume in advance of the NCAA tournament, with selection day occurring on Monday afternoon. Last weekend, the Maroons took down Brandeis 85-68, led by a 30-point performance from UAA Athlete of the Week Taylor Lake. They followed up with a 68-48 win over New York University, spurred by a 28-6 run to start the game.

Men's Basketball

In its final game of the season, UChicago (15-9 overall, 8-5 UAA) faces off with rival Washington – St. Louis (16-8, 9-4 UAA) on the road Saturday.

In the past seven meetings between the two teams, three games have been decided by two points or fewer. Back on January 5, the Maroons beat WashU 88-80 behind 12 three-pointers. Junior point guard Jordan Baum dished out 11 assists and sophomore forward Dominic Laravie scored a career-high 24 points.
