UChicago Athletics Preview: March 25-31


UChicago (6-2 record) wraps up its Texas road swing with a pair of nationally-ranked opponents, with No. 1-ranked Trinity University Texas (17-5) on Monday night and No. 8-ranked Texas Lutheran University (15-6) on Tuesday night. The Maroons return for their Midwest Conference four-game series at Lawrence University (3-8) on Saturday and Sunday.

The Maroon pitching staff sports a 2.03 ERA in 62 innings, which ranks second in NCAA Division III. First-year pitcher Kyle Petri has struck out at least 11 batters in all three of his appearances this year. As a team, UChicago has stolen 16 bases on 17 attempts, with senior outfielder Connor Hickey leading the way at 5-for-5.

The Maroons (1-3 record) continues its annual spring break trip to Florida with eight more games this week. Doubleheaders are scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

UChicago has scored in the first inning in three of its four games this season. First-year Bethany Regnerus owns a 1.85 ERA while appearing in relief in all four contests. Sophomore outfielder Abby Hayes is hitting  for a .545 batting average with four RBI, including a pinch-hit triple that provided the winning runs against Union (N.Y.) College.

Men's and Women's Tennis

The No. 1-ranked UChicago men (9-0 record) and No. 9-ranked Maroon women (6-2 record) fly out to California for their spring break matches. Their opponents included the No. 14-ranked Pomona-Pitzer men, Williams College (#5 men/#5 women) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (#6 men/#2 women).

Both Maroon squads have played five nationally-ranked opponents apiece already this season. UChicago's women are currently undefeated at No. 6 singles at 8-0 while going 7-1 at No. 2 doubles. The Maroons men have won all nine of its bouts at No. 6 singles and are 8-1 at No. 3 doubles.

Women's Lacrosse

The Maroons (6-0 record) head to California as well for their first road contests of the season. Evening matches are scheduled for Wednesday at Whittier College (3-6) and Thursday at University of Redlands (4-4).

UChicago's 22 goals versus Linfield College on Sunday were a season high for an offense that ranks eighth nationally in goals per game (17.8). The Maroon defense only surrendered one shot in the second half versus Linfield. Five different players have already accumulated at least 11 goals this season.

Track & Field

UChicago begins its outdoor season on Saturday at the Augustana College Viking Olympics.

At the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships, first-year Isabel Maletich won the national title in the women's long jump (5.91 meters). She also took sixth in the triple jump to earn All-American honors. Sophomore Sophie Elgamal finished third in the 3,000 meters, while junior Laura Darcey and senior Alexandra Thompson took sixth and eighth, respectively, in the high jump.
