UChicago Athletics Preview: April 8-14

Softball

UChicago (7-11 record) has six games on its docket this week. The Maroons host Finlandia University (7-17) for a home doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. They then head down to Bloomington, Ill. for a four-game invitational featuring No. 4-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University (17-4), Millikin University (18-6) and University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (14-3-1).

UChicago split a doubleheader versus Kalamazoo College on Sunday, winning 4-3 in walk-off fashion and losing 9-5. First-year outfielder Lainey Hughes knocked the game-winning double in the bottom of the seventh inning. UChicago has hit six home runs over its past five games.

Baseball

The Maroons (9-4 record) make their home debut this week with five games at J. Kyle Anderson Field. They will host Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (12-8) on Wednesday, Grinnell College (11-13) on Saturday and Knox College (6-19) on Sunday.

UChicago took two of three games in a weekend series at Cornell College. First-year pitcher Sam Bennett struck out 11 batters in 7.1 innings pitched in Saturday's 4-1 win. He struck out at least one batter in every inning. Sophomore shortstop Brian Lyle led the offense with a .429 batting average (6-14) along with two RBI and five runs scored.

Men's Tennis

No. 1-ranked UChicago (12-1 record) welcomes three teams to Hyde Park this week. The Maroons will face off with Augustana College (15-4) on Wednesday, No. 14-ranked Case Western Reserve University (15-6) on Saturday and No. 8-ranked Washington University – St. Louis (11-4) on Sunday.

Last week, UChicago swept through Illinois Institute of Technology by a 9-0 score. The Maroons will have played 10 nationally-ranked opponents on their schedule before the upcoming University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship. Four Maroons have tallied at least 15 singles wins this season.

Women's Lacrosse

The Maroons (10-1 record) continue their College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) slate with Augustana (4-7) on Wednesday night at Stagg Field.

UChicago went 3-0 last week and outscored their two CCIW opponents – Elmhurst College and North Central College – by a combined 39-10 score. First-year attacker Lally Johnson was named CCIW Offensive Player of the Week after totaling five goals and 11 assists. The Maroons have put 81 percent of their shots on goal this season.

Outdoor Track & Field

UChicago travels to the western suburbs for the Benedictine University Relays on Friday and Saturday.

Last Saturday, the Maroon women won the Wheaton Invitational while the men finished runner-up. Junior Isabel Garon won the pole vault with a height of 3.55 meters, which ranks 25th in the nation. Junior Maggie Boudreau's winning 10,000-meter time of 37:55.42 is 18th nationally.

Women's Tennis

The No. 9-ranked Maroons (9-4 record) face off with a pair of UAA opponents at home this weekend, with No. 31-ranked Case Western Reserve University (7-7) on Saturday and No. 16-ranked Washington University – St. Louis (6-9) on Sunday.

UChicago won its fourth-straight Midwest Invitational over the weekend, defeating DePauw University 8-1, Denison University 8-1 and No. 11-ranked Kenyon College 6-3. First-year Nicole Semenov went 6-0 combined at No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles. She currently leads the team with a 14-2 singles record this season.
