UChicago Athletics Preview: April 29 - May 5


UChicago (20-8, 8-4 MWC North) concludes its Midwest Conference slate with a four-game series versus Beloit College (13-15, 4-6) this weekend. The Bucs will host two contests on Saturday while the Maroons host a doubleheader on Sunday.

Junior outfielder Payton Jancsy was the MWC Position Player of the Week on Monday after helping UChicago go 5-2 last week. He posted a .533 batting average with five extra-base hits, six stolen bases and 11 RBI. The UChicago pitching staff currently leads all of NCAA Division III with 10.8 strikeouts per nine innings.

Women's Lacrosse

The Maroons (14-2, 6-1 CCIW) will participate in their first College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Tournament this week. UChicago is the No. 2 seed and will host a semifinal on Wednesday night versus No. 3-seed North Central College (14-3, 5-2). The winner will take on either No. 1-seed Illinois Wesleyan University (15-2, 7-0) or No. 4-seed Carroll University (10-5, 4-3) on Saturday afternoon. The tournament champion receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA postseason.

The CCIW announced its 2019 All-Conference awards on Tuesday. Midfielder Karina Schulze was named Offensive Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year. Head Coach Kate Robinson was voted as CCIW Co-Coach of the Year. Attacker Lally Johnson and defender Adriana Shutler were also picked to the First Team, while midfielder Audrey Kaus was a Second Team recipient.

Outdoor Track & Field

UChicago travels to Loras College on Friday for the Dr. Tucker Open.

Last weekend, the Maroons competed in the University Athletic Association (UAA) Outdoor Championships down in Atlanta. The women finished runner-up and the men took fourth in the final team standings. UChicago earned four UAA titles – junior Alexander Scott in the men's hammer throw, first-year Isabel Maletich in the women's long jump, senior Nicole VacaGuzman in the women's 800 meters and junior Laura Darcey in the women's high jump.
