UChicago Athletics Preview: May 6-12


UChicago (23-9 record, 11-5 MWC North) enters its final week of the regular season in preparation for the upcoming Midwest Conference Tournament. The Maroons will play a road game at University of Illinois-Chicago (20-20) on Tuesday night. They then head out to west side of the state for the MWC Tournament, opening up with Cornell College (22-16) on Friday morning. The winner of the double-elimination tournament will receive an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Championship field.

UChicago won three out of four games versus Beloit College over the weekend to clinch the MWC North Division. In need of a Sunday sweep to make the conference playoffs, the Maroons won game one 7-6 on a walk-off single in the 11th inning by sophomore second baseman James Kelly. They followed up with an 11-6 victory in the nightcap. First-year third baseman Carson Weekley hit .500 in the series with two doubles, three walks and three RBI.

Outdoor Track & Field

The Maroons will take part in the two-day Dr. Keller Invitational, hosted by North Central College, on Thursday and Friday.

At the most recent Loras College Dr. Tucker Open, UChicago captured three event titles. Junior Isabel Garon won the women's pole vault (3.50 meters), first-year Isabel Maletich captured the women's triple jump (11.87 meters) and sophomore Jack Barbour crossed the line first in the men's 5,000 meters (15:24.97).

Men's Tennis

No. 2-ranked UChicago (17-2 record) has been selected to host an NCAA Division III Championship regional this Friday-Sunday. The Maroons received a first-round bye in the six-team regional and will play Saturday morning against either Luther College (18-6) or Augustana College (24-6). The regional championship is scheduled for Noon on Sunday.

UChicago has qualified for five-straight NCAA postseasons and seven overall in program history. The team has advanced to the NCAA semifinals in three of the past four seasons. So far this season, the Maroons own a .667 singles winning percentage and a .732 doubles winning percentage while defeating 11 nationally-ranked teams.

Women's Tennis

The No. 12-ranked Maroons (14-5 record) return to the NCAA Division III Championship and will travel to University of Wisconsin-Whitewater for a seven-team regional Friday-Sunday. After earning a first-round bye, UChicago will play Lake Forest College (21-3) or Luther College (15-9) on Saturday. The regional championship will be played on Sunday afternoon.

The Maroons are riding an 11-year streak of participation in the NCAA postseason, qualifying every year since 2009. They have advanced to the quarterfinals eight times. The team has won nine matches against nationally-ranked foes while sporting winning percentages of .738 in singles and .712 in doubles.
