CHICAGO – Opening weekend proved fruitful for the University of Chicago, and the success was recognized with three Athlete of the Week awards from the University Athletic Association (UAA) on Monday.
Leah Ulrich's impressive debut resulted in AOW status for women's cross country. The first-year won the University of St. Francis Twilight Invite on Friday in a field of 154 racers. Her 5K race time was 18:14. The Maroons took home the team title as well.
For the ninth time in her career, Emma Griffith received UAA Athlete of the Week honors. The junior setter led No. 9-ranked UChicago volleyball to a 3-1 record as hosts of the Gargoyle Classic. She was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 10.57 assists, 3.86 digs, 0.5 blocks and 0.64 aces per set. Griffith put up 41 assists and 20 digs versus Concordia (Wis.) University, followed by 43 assists and 14 digs against University of Texas-Dallas.
Junior goalkeeper Aaron Katsimpalis earned his fifth career UAA Defensive Athlete of the Week in men's soccer. The No. 3-ranked Maroons collected a pair of 0-0 shutouts over the weekend in road matches at Macalester College and No. 12-ranked University of St. Thomas. Katsimpalis made two saves in each contest, keeping a clean sheet over the course of a combined 220 minutes of action.
