UChicago Athletics Preview: September 2-8


No. 13-ranked UChicago (3-1 record) makes its first road trip to Illinois Wesleyan University's Holiday Inn Express Classic on Friday and Saturday. Six total teams will be in action. Opponents include Otterbein University (5-0), Hendrix College (3-0) and Millikin University (2-1).

The Maroons kicked off opening weekend by hosting the annual Gargoyle Classic last weekend. Three players were named to the All-Tournament Team – junior setter Emma Griffith (10.57 assists per set), senior outside hitter Anne Marie Stifter (2.86 kills per set) and junior outside hitter Fredericka Paulson (2.43 kills per set). Griffith earned University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week honors on Tuesday afternoon.

Cross Country

The Maroons gear up for their second race of the season on Friday at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Invitational on Friday. The women commence at 5:00 PM, followed by the men at 6:00 PM.

UChicago posted dominant team performances last Friday at the University of St. Francis Twilight Invitational as both squads finished first in the standings. Six women and five men finished in the top 10 individually. First-year Leah Ulrich won the women's race in 18:14 to garner UAA Athlete of the Week.

Women's Soccer

UChicago (1-0) makes its home debut versus Pomona-Pitzer (1-0-1) on Saturday and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (2-0) on Sunday afternoon.

Last Saturday, the Maroons blasted past Milwaukee School of Engineering by a 6-0 margin. Senior Adrianna Vera and junior Katie Jasminski scored two goals each. The defensive effort limited the Raiders to a mere three shots (none on goal), while the offense fired off 29 shots. The Maroons have now won nine-straight season openers.

Men's Soccer

No. 3-ranked UChicago (0-0-2) will play host to No. 21-ranked North Park University on Saturday afternoon on the Stagg Field turf.

The Maroons shut out both its Minnesota opponents, coming away with a pair of 0-0 ties at Macalester College and No. 12-ranked University of St. Thomas. Junior goalkeeper Aaron Katsimpalis stopped all four shots he saw over the weekend, which led to his selection as UAA Defensive Athlete of the Week. He increased his career shutout tally to 16.

The Maroons make their 2019 debut on Saturday night at home versus rival Washington University – St. Louis.
