UChicago Athletics Preview: September 16-22

Men's Soccer

No. 6-ranked UChicago (2-0-3 record) plays a pair of road games this week at Wheaton College (4-2) on Tuesday night and No. 9-ranked Loras College (6-0-1) on Friday evening.

The Maroons continued their trend of double overtime contests last week, with a 3-2 win at Hope College and a 1-1 tie versus Rowan University. UChicago trailed 2-0 in the opening minutes against Hope but rallied back as junior Scott Lich scored the tying goal in the final minute of regulation. Junior Ben Brandt won the game in the 103rd minute. Sophomore Vicente Mateus was picked as the University Athletic Association (UAA) Offensive Athlete of the Week on Monday (1 goal, 2 assists).

Women's Soccer

The No. 20-ranked Maroons (3-1 record) look to continue their offensive roll on Tuesday night at North Central College (4-2-1) and Saturday afternoon versus Kalamazoo College (1-4-2).

UChicago has scored six goals in each of its three wins this season, including a 6-1 rout of Illinois Wesleyan University last Saturday. In that game, senior Clare Suter tied a school record with four assists. Senior Hanna Watkins added two header goals and one assist. All told, the Maroons have outshot their four opponents by a combined total of 94-18, to go with a 30-7 advantage on corner kicks.

Volleyball

No. 6-ranked UChicago (9-1 record) has a big week ahead, starting with a Wednesday night showdown with No. 1-ranked Calvin College (9-0) at home. The Maroons then head out to Brandeis University for UAA Round Robin #1 this weekend. Their opponents will be New York University (10-1), Case Western Reserve University (4-7) and Washington University – St. Louis (9-4).

During its current eight-match winning streak, UChicago has won 24 of the 26 sets with six shutouts. In a pair of wins over University of Dubuque and North Park University, junior setter Emma Griffith put 91 combined assists (13.0 per set), including a season-high 50 versus Dubuque. Senior middle hitter Madison Pearson converted 40.9 percent of her attack for kills on the week, including a .786 hitting percentage against North Park.

Women's Tennis

The Maroons will compete at the annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Championships, which are hosted by Kalamazoo College from Thursday-Sunday.

Senior Marjorie Antohi is a three-time singles finalist at the ITA Central Regional. At last year's ITA Regional, UChicago advanced five singles players and three doubles tandems to the quarterfinal rounds. Along with Antohi in singles, the doubles team of Eugenia Lee and Lauren Park reached the final as well.

Cross Country

After taking a week off from competition, UChicago resumes its race schedule at Wheaton College's Gil Dodds Invitational on Saturday. St. James Farm Forest Preserve is the race site in Warrenville, Ill.

So far this season, the Maroons men have won a pair of team titles at the University of St. Francis Invite and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Invite. The women won the St. Francis Invite and took runner-up at Wisconsin-Parkside.
