UChicago Athletics Preview: September 30 - October 6

Men's Soccer

No. 6-ranked UChicago (3-1-4 record) returns home for a Tuesday night contest versus Elmhurst College (7-3-1). The Maroons then begin University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Saturday afternoon against Emory University (5-3-1).

UChicago has gone to double overtime five times in eight games played this season. Junior goalkeeper Aaron Katsimpalis owns an .805 save percentage with 33 saves. The Maroons have outscored their opponents 7-2 in the second half and overtimes of games.

Cross Country

Coming off a one-week break, the Maroons are back in action at Augustana College's Brissman/Lundeen Invitational on Friday. The women's 6K race begins at 4:30 PM with the men's 8K to follow at 5:15 PM.

Junior Ryan Cutter made history when he became the first UChicago men's cross country runner to be named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division III National Athlete of the Week on Sept. 24. He won the Wheaton College Gil Dodds Invitational with a time of 25:18.1. In the wake of their team win at the invite, UChicago's women climbed to their highest USTFCCCA national ranking ever at No. 2.

Men's Tennis

UChicago makes its season debut at the three-day Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Championships, hosted by Kalamazoo College. The singles and doubles tournament runs from Friday-Sunday.

At the ITA Central Regional, the Maroons have won five-straight doubles titles and four of the last five singles crowns. UChicago posted a 20-3 team record last year and advanced to the NCAA Semifinals for the fourth time in program history. Returning All-Americans include Erik Kerrigan, Ninan Kumar, Tyler Raclin and Jeremy Yuan.

Women's Soccer

The No. 12-ranked Maroons (6-1-1 record) play their first UAA conference game of the season hosting Emory (6-2) on Saturday.

Senior forward Adrianna Vera maintained her scoring pace with a third-straight game with a goal. She has scored at least once in six of the eight games this season. Senior midfielder Hanna Watkins has tallied at least one point in six of eight games as well. Junior goalkeeper Miranda Malone was picked as UAA Defensive Athlete of the Week on Monday, making a combined six saves in a 1-1 tie with No. 8-ranked Wheaton College and a 4-0 win at Calvin University.

UChicago (1-2 record) hits the road for a Saturday afternoon contest at Beloit College (0-3).

The No. 3-ranked Maroons (14-1 record) put their 13-match win streak on the line for the UAA Round Robin #2 this weekend, hosted by Emory University. UChicago plays a pair of Sunday matches versus Brandeis University (3-10) and No. 14-ranked Carnegie Mellon University (14-3).

Junior setter Emma Griffith and senior outside hitter Anne Marie Stifter were repeat winners as UAA Athletes of the Week on Monday. Griffith leads the nation in assists per set at 11.56. UChicago currently ranks third in NCAA Division III in kills per set (14.08). First-year middle hitter Ellie Alden's .384 hitting percentage leads the team – the school record for a season is .390 by Koryn Kendall in 2005.
