CHICAGO – The University of Chicago earned three University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week awards on Monday afternoon.
The Maroons swept the UAA volleyball honors with Madison Pearson and Emma Griffith. In UChicago's first week owning the No. 1 national ranking, the team went 3-0, including a four-set road win at No. 20-ranked Hope College.
Pearson excelled in all facets over the course of three wins. The senior middle hitter converted 55 percent of her attacks while averaging 2.7 kills per set. She also racked up 10 blocks in 10 sets played. Griffith averaged 11.3 assists per set, 2.90 digs per set and 0.60 blocks per set in the matches. The junior setter orchestrated the attack which hit .340 against Wheaton College and .247 versus Hope.
The UAA Women's Soccer Defensive Athlete of the Week went to Emma Smith. A sophomore goalkeeper, Smith made her first career start in last week's 1-0 victory at Illinois Institute of Technology. She made two saves on open rushes on goal in the second half, reaching up to stop an attempted chip shot and going low to collect a chance from the right wing. Smith finished with three saves to earn her first collegiate shutout.
