CHICAGO – The University of Chicago was represented with five Athlete of the Week accolades from the University Athletic Association (UAA) on Monday.
Scott Lich was the UAA Defensive Athlete of the Week in men's soccer. As the starting right back, Lich helped lead the defense to its 10th shutout of the season while scoring a goal in a 3-0 win over rival Washington University – St. Louis. The junior was part of the greatest defensive season in UAA history as the Maroons went a perfect 7-0 with no goals allowed in conference games.
The UAA Offensive Athlete of the Week in women's soccer was Nicole Kaspi. The sophomore forward came off the bench to score a breakaway goal in the first half of Saturday's 1-1 tie with No. 3-ranked Washington-St. Louis.
Ben Sarasin's 184-pound title at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Invitational was rewarded with UAA Wrestler of the Week and d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week status. The sophomore went 4-0 on the day and won the title match 9-5 over Shane Liegel from Loras College. He tallied two major decisions and two decisions.
A career-high scoring effort by Cole Schmitz led to UAA Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week honors. In the season opener at Millikin University, the senior guard posted 25 points in 26 minutes in UChicago's 85-75 victory. Schmitz made 6 of 8 attempts from three-point range.
Mike Martinson pulled in his in fourth UAA weekly honor of the season, this time for offensive. The Maroon junior running back ran the ball 30 times for 148 rushing yards in a 20-14 victory at Illinois College. So far this season, Martinson is averaging 6.3 yards per carry and 15.7 yards per punt return.
