CHICAGO – The University of Chicago was recognized by the University Athletic Association (UAA) with four Athletes of the Week on Monday afternoon.
Steve Bonsall received the weekly honor in wrestling. The senior grappler won the 157-pound weight class title at Elmhurst College's Al Hanke Invitational on Saturday. He went 4-0 with a pair of pins, ultimately winning 2-1 in the final versus Harper College. Bonsall was named the invite's Most Outstanding Wrestler at the conclusion of the day. So far this season, Bonsall owns a 21-5 record.
The Maroons hauled in three swimming and diving awards as well. Reona Yamaguchi led the way as UAA Men's Swimmer of the Week. In Saturday's meet versus University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Yamaguchi broke his own pool and school record in the 100-yard IM by finishing in 51.67. He also swept the 100-yard breaststroke (58.28) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:09.48). The previous day against Lewis University and Olivet Nazarene University, Yamaguchi won the 200-yard IM in 1:53.58. He was also part of the winning 200-yard medley relay (1:33.15).
The UAA Women's Swimmer of the Week went to Chanell Kann. The UChicago first-year broke the school record in the 100 IM in 59.42. She also picked up victories in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.02) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:24.15). Kann also swam a leg on the winning 200-yard medley relay (1:48.12). The previous day versus Lewis and Olivet Nazarene, she also captured the 100 breast and the 200-yard IM.
First-year Andrew Chen became UAA Men's Diver of the Week for the second time this season. Chen broke the school record on the one-meter board (six dives) with a score of 330.15 points versus Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He also swept the one-meter (295.50) and three-meter dives (332.63) versus Lewis and Olivet Nazarene.
