CHICAGO – The University Athletic Association picked five University of Chicago student-athletes as Athletes of the Week on Monday afternoon.
The Maroons swept the UAA Women's Track & Field Athletes of the Week after standout performances at Illinois Wesleyan University's I-55 Triangular. Sophomore Isabel Maletich earned a pair of field wins – her indoor long jump of 5.73 meters is ranked No. 1 in all of NCAA Division III, while her indoor triple jump of 11.12 meters ranks No. 25. Fellow sophomore Kaitlyn Van Baalen won the indoor 800 meters in a time of 2:17.16, which ranks fourth in the nation.
Mia Farrell garnered the weekly honor for women's basketball. The senior guard tied her career high with 31 points in Friday's 82-71 win over New York University. She then added 11 points and eight rebounds in Sunday's 68-60 overtime victory against Brandeis University. On the season, Farrell is averaging 13.9 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.
UChicago tennis was recognized on both the men's and women's side. The Maroons made their successful 2020 debut over the weekend, beating NCAA Division II opponent Lewis University 9-0 (women) and 8-1 (men).
Junior Jeremy Yuan earned a 7-6 (10-8), 6-3 win at No. 2 singles, and also teamed up with senior Erik Kerrigan to smash their No. 2 doubles opposition by an 8-1 margin. On the season, Yuan is 3-1 in singles and 1-0 in doubles.
Sophomore Lauren Park was named UAA Athlete of the Week for the third time this season. She started the day with an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles alongside junior teammate Catherine Xu. Park followed up with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles. Her season record now stands at 14-1 in singles and 3-2 in doubles.
