CHICAGO – The University of Chicago hauled in four Athlete of the Week accolades from the University Athletic Association (UAA) on Monday afternoon.
Elizabeth Cron was picked as the UAA Women's Diver of the Week for the second time this season. Cron was the top NCAA Division III diver at Saturday's University of Illinois-Chicago Diving Invite, which was primarily attended by NCAA Division I programs. The sophomore finished second out of 23 divers in the one-meter dive (263.60 points) and sixth out of 20 divers in the three-meter dive (256.15 points).
Steve Bonsall received his second UAA Wrestler of the Week of the past three weeks. The senior went 5-1 over the weekend to capture third place in the 157-pound weight class at Wheaton College's Pete Willson Invitational. The Wheaton Invite is the oldest and largest small-college wrestling tournament in the country, featuring 34 teams this year. Bonsall scored a 6-4 win in overtime in his final match to help lead UChicago to a sixth-place showing in the team standings. On the season, he owns an overall record of 26-6.
The UAA Women's Field Athlete of the Week went to Laura Darcey. The Maroon senior won the high jump with a height of 1.71 meters at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawk Classic. That mark currently ranks third in all of NCAA Division III. The 1.71 meters is a career-best by Darcey and is the second-highest in school history.
Joshua Xu received UAA Athlete of the Week status in men's tennis. The UChicago sophomore made quick work of his Augustana College counterparts at No. 3 singles and No. 3 doubles. He won his singles match 6-2, 6-3 and teamed with first-year Sachin Das to shut out their doubles opposition 8-0. Xu owns a 4-1 record in singles and a 5-1 mark in doubles this season.
