CHICAGO – The University of Chicago announced on Thursday that Rosalie Resch will serve as the Interim Director of Athletics & Recreation, effective July 1, 2020.
Previously on May 7, Harvard University announced that Erin McDermott had been hired as the school's Director of Athletics. McDermott led UChicago Athletics & Recreation as athletic director for seven years (July 2013 – June 2020).
Resch is the current Senior Associate Athletic Director for Finance and Internal Operations. Her wide scope of responsibility includes oversight of departmental budget and finances, sports medicine, NCAA compliance, varsity team operations, camps and clinics management, and foreign travel approvals.
"I am extremely excited to serve in the role as Interim Director of Athletics & Recreation during this time of transition," Resch said. "Erin McDermott has set us on a strong path in becoming a leading intercollegiate athletic program in Division III, in strengthening the intramural and recreational sports programs, in enhancing our athletic facilities in function and in appearance, and in forming new bonds with our alumni and with the University community. I am grateful for this opportunity to continue to move the department forward on the path that has been set for us.

Now in her 45th year, Resch is the longest tenured employee within Athletics & Recreation. Her ties to the University first began as a varsity student-athlete in three sports, representing the Maroons in volleyball, softball and badminton. Resch graduated in 1973 with her bachelor's degree in Russian Language and Literature.
Resch soon returned to Hyde Park as UChicago's head volleyball coach. She led the Maroons for 21 seasons from 1977-97, and remains the program's all-time leader in victories (263). Additionally, she was also head coach of the softball team for one season in 1985.
Resch is also the departmental liaison to the Graduate Women's Athletic Association and is responsible for the overall management of all University Athletic Association (UAA) and NCAA regional championships conducted on campus. She has served UChicago Athletics in various roles during her tenure. Resch previously directed the intramural and club sports program, functioned as the director of the required Physical Education program and advised the Women's Athletic Association.
Within the University community, Resch has served as an elected member of the College Council and the University Senate, a member of the Undergraduate Discipline Committee, and as a Sexual Harassment Complaint Adviser. She was also previously chair of the Student Leader Awards Committee.
Resch has been actively involved on NCAA national committees. She was appointed to the NCAA Division III Management Council, the DIII Championship Committee, the Playing and Practice Seasons Subcommittee, the Strategic Planning Subcommittee and the Working Group on Life Balance issues. She was also elected Chair of the Academic Issues Subcommittee and the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship National Selection Committee, and currently serves on the NCAA Technology Group.
Resch has also contributed at the conference level as an At-Large Delegate to the Executive Committee of the UAA and as a member of the UAA Strategic Review Committee.
