CLERMONT, Fla. – After splitting their first two days of action in Florida, University of Chicago softball was looking to sweep Saint Joseph's College of Maine and Edgewood. The Maroons scored in some unconventional ways during their first win of the day against the Monks before seeing their bats come alive in a big way against the Eagles for the second of two victories.
RESULTS
Saint Joseph's – 4
UChicago – 6
UChicago – 13
Edgewood – 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
- vs. Saint Joseph's
- University of Chicago's (7-3) contest against Saint Joseph's College of Maine (1-4) just had one of those box scores that makes the game of softball so interesting. The Maroons managed just two hits all afternoon but ended up scoring six runs in total.
- Three of those runs came in the first inning. Both Ally Gore and Natalie Antin came around to score on wild pitches and Madeline Murphy came across as an unearned run for the third of the frame. The Maroons did the same thing in the second with runs coming across via an error, passed ball, and sacrifice fly from Antin.
- The unconventional offense proved to be successful though as UChicago held the Monks to just one run in five innings before being able to shut down their comeback threat in the sixth for the 6-4 victory.
- vs. Edgewood
- Hits certainly did not come at a premium for the Maroons in the second game of the day against Edgewood (7-7). UChicago collected 13 base knocks over six innings and the scoreboard saw plenty of action because of it.
- After plating a run in the first, Chicago scored four in the fifth which was highlighted by a Olivia Cataldo RBI single and another hit from Antin that drove in two. It was the sixth frame where they broke things open, however. The Maroons plated eight runs in the stanza and got RBIs from Gore, Ava Sinai, Tory Piuze, and Brianna Leech.
- That was more than enough for the Maroons pitching staff. Paige Heffke went five innings of one hit ball and six strikeouts as she grabbed her third win of the year behind a 13-2 UChicago victory.
CHICAGO COMMENTS
- This was the first ever contest against Saint Joseph's (Maine) for the Maroons while they are now 1-1 against Edgewood all time.
