Softball Sweeps #15 UW-Whitewater

CHICAGO – University of Chicago softball welcomed the Warhawks of UW-Whitewater to the Stagg Grass Fields as their season rolled on with two big contests against a ranked opponent. The Maroons were up to the task with some advantageous baserunning and clutch hits in game one before the offense exploded in a 9-1 blowout of No. 15 UWW on Wednesday for the series sweep.

RESULTS
No. 15 UW-Whitewater – 4
UChicago – 5

No. 15 UW-Whitewater- 1
UChicago – 9

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Game One
    • University of Chicago (15-8) battled No. 15 UW-Whitewater (13-3) in a tight contest where "wild" would be the word of the day for the Maroons. They took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second off a Madeline Murphy single that scored Anna Jensen and a Natalie Antin walk would load the bases. The Maroons then added another tally in the same frame when a wild pitch helped push across Alina Yazek to put them up by two.
    • Single run innings from the Warhawks in the third, fourth, and fifth frames gave the visitors the 3-2 lead, but Chicago would have an answer for them in the bottom half of that fifth inning. Another two runs would come across to score on a pair of wild pitches, but a UWW run in the top of the seventh tied the game at 4-4.
    • The Maroon & White would have the last laugh in game one though. With two down, Yazek would single with the bases loaded to plate the winning run and give the Maroons the 5-4 victory.
  • Game Two
    • UChicago didn't need any opposing pitcher control issues to dominate game two, however. The Maroons started the eventual blowout with a little bit of wildness from the Warhawks infielders and pushed across two runs or three errors in the second inning to go up 2-0.
    • UC took care of things on their own in the third though. The Maroon & White got their first two runs of the frame off an Antin two-run homer to right field before a Clare Fortier double and Jensen single netted the stanza's other two RBIs.
    • Up 6-1, the Maroons ended the game early with a three run six inning. Antin drew a walk with the bases loaded and Maya Martinez knocked one up the middle during the very next UChicago at-bat to net the two mercy rule tallies.
    • Delaney Romanchick dominated in the circle and gave up just one run off five hits in a complete game performance as the Maroons swept the Warhawks with a 9-1 game two thrashing.
CHICAGO COMMENTS
  • This is the second straight season that the Maroons have swept the Warhawks in a two-game series. They have now won four out of the last five contests between the two squads dating back to 2022.
