CHICAGO – Having earned a first round bye, No. 25 University of Chicago began their portion of the 2024 NCAA D-III women's lacrosse tournament at Stagg Field against familiar foe (RV) Colorado College on Sunday. The two teams played an extremely tight contest in the first half but a slow moving third quarter from the Maroons allowed the Tigers to grab the win and advance in the tournament.
RESULT
(RV) Colorado College – 20
No. 25 UChicago – 14
HOW IT HAPPENED
- No. 25 University of Chicago (13-5) scored the games first two goals and either held the lead or a share of it for most of the opening quarter. However, (RV) Colorado College (16-5) scored with 26 seconds left to grab their first advantage in the contest and the two teams would enter the second with the Tigers up 5-4.
- With the Maroons down 8-5, Jane Chen netted back-to-back man-up goals to get UChicago back within one but a pair of CC tallies to end the first half dealt the home team a three-point deficit with 30 minutes left to play.
- Unfortunately, the offensive production for the Maroons slowed in the third and four unanswered strikes from Colorado College didn't help matters. The defense didn't quit though, and their efforts kept the Tigers off the scoreboard for the first eight minutes of the final frame. This allowed UChicago to pull back within three with goals from Jill Hooey, Peyton McGuire, and Wynne Boggan.
- It wasn't enough, however. The Tigers got back on track with another five-goal run which sealed the Maroons fate in a 20-14 loss to bring yet another successful season to a close. Gabrielle Kiewe saved five shots in net for UChicago and Hooey led all players with four caused turnovers in the losing effort.
