ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The 8th-ranked University of Chicago men's basketball team rolled to an 84-70 win over Rhodes College to kick of the All-Academic Classic on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons shot 52.7% from the field and 47.8% from beyond the arc in one of their top offensive performances of the season.
The Maroons jumped out to a double-digit lead just over six minutes into the game thanks to a 10-0 run on a pair of threes inside by
Eamonn Kenah and
Phillip Lawrence as well as layups by Lawrence and
Noah Pit to take a 20-6 advantage.
Rhodes would continue to battle to keep the lead within grasp, and a 14-4 run would cut the UChicago lead to 29-25. However, threes by
Daniel Cochran and Pit would help open the lead back to double figures where it would stay for the remainder of the half as UChicago took a 44-31 lead into the locker room.
The offensive firepower would continue in the second half as UChicago would score on its first five possession, and a monster dunk by Cochran extended the lead to 18 points, the largest of the game to that point, at 58-40.
The Lynx continued to push their way back, but the Maroons' depth and shot making down the stretch helped seal the win for UChicago.
The Maroons finished with six players in double figures in the win, led by
Joe Berry with 15 points and five assists.
Nick Roper added 14 points and five rebounds, and
Shane Regan added 12 points, five assists, and four rebounds. Off the bench,
Phillip Lawrence scored 13 points on 5-9 shooting with three three-pointers.
Daniel Cochran added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and
Eamonn Kenah rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points.
With the win, the Maroons improve to 4-1 on the season. UChicago returns to action on Sunday at 1 PM as the team returns to the floor in St. Louis to take on Colorado College in the second game of the All-Academic Classic.
