ST. LOUIS -- The 8th-ranked University of Chicago men's basketball team weathered 10 lead changes to earn a hard-fought 73-69 win over Colorado College on Sunday afternoon to close out a weekend sweep at the All-Academic Classic.
UChicago started the afternoon slowly on offense, missing its first three shots before
Joe Berry cut to the rim to knock down UChicago's first two. Both teams traded baskets throughout the first half, with Colorado College finding its offensive attack inside the paint and on the boards to pull ahead 13–8. The Maroons briefly came back as
Nick Roper burst out to a transition finish to start a 6-0 run, but the Tigers maintained the lead. A three-pointer from Berry and a layup from
Luke Smith gave UChicago a 32–28 edge with under a minute left, but Colorado College closed the half with a buzzer-beating drive to take the 33-32 lead into the break.
The start of the second half featured more back-and-forth play until the Maroons' defense began making stops. After a three from Roper to make it 50–48 with just under 12 minutes to go, UChicago delivered a 12-0 run as
Shane Regan completed back-to-back finishes at the rim. A few seconds later, Regan drilled a right-wing three, then drew contact inside to sink two free throws to give UChicago the seven-point lead. The Tigers were able to find a basket after going scoreless for almost five minutes, but the Maroons' momentum shift continued with a Berry layup off a Regan assist.
Colorado College refused to go away, repeatedly attacking in transition and taking the lead to 61–59 with just over four minutes remaining.
Eamonn Kenah then delivered a deep three from the top of the arc to push the lead back to five with 4:13 to go. After the Tigers cut the margin again, Kenah struck once more, off a Smith kick-out, to make it a two-possession game with under two minutes left.
UChicago outlasted a final surge from Colorado College in the final 60 seconds, making it a one-score game. The Tigers went to foul Regan to stop the clock, but the Larchmont native knocked down two clutch free throws to extend the lead back to three. After the Tigers converted 1 of 2 at the line on the next trip, Roper secured the defensive rebound and was fouled immediately, knocking down his two free throws to secure the win for UChicago.
Regan led all scorers with 19 points, including 14 coming from his dominant second half. Roper finished with 16 points and six rebounds, going 7-for-10 at the free-throw line, while Berry posted 11 points and five boards.
Eamonn Kenah added 10 points and six rebounds, and Smith anchored the Maroons' bench with nine boards.
With the win, the Maroons improve to 5-1 on the season. UChicago returns to action on Wednesday night as the team travels to Lake Forest for a non-conference matchup with the Foresters.
