Bronx, N.Y. —The University of Chicago softball team delivered a dominant doubleheader sweep over NYU on Friday, shutting out the Violets in both contests and improving to 17-19 on the season.
Game 1: UChicago 4, NYU 0
Senior pitcher
Paige Heffke was in control from start to finish, throwing six shutout innings while allowing just one hit and striking out two.
Evelyn Soh closed the door with a clean seventh, sealing the Maroons' fourth shutout of the year.
UChicago struck early, plating one in the first and adding two more in the second behind an RBI single from
Audrey Hui and a two-run knock by
Matilda Nelson.
Laila Sims capped the scoring with a solo home run—her fifth of the season—in the sixth.
The offense tallied eight hits and swiped three bases.
Game 2: UChicago 8, NYU 0
The Maroons' offense exploded in the nightcap, pounding out 13 hits and scoring in six of the seven innings. Five different players registered multiple hits with
Matilda Nelson going 3-4 and scoring twice.
Maya Martinez added two hits and two RBIs while
Sedona Ding and
Anna Jensen each drove in a run as well.
Second-year pitcher
Alana Kimball earned her fifth win of the season, tossing five scoreless frames and scattering four hits.
Nicole Wong handled the final two innings to preserve the shutout. The defense stayed sharp with two double plays while NYU struggled in the field, committing four errors.
With the sweep, UChicago improves to 17-19 on the season and secured its first UAA series win on the road this season.
