Softball Dominates NYU Behind Nelson’s Big Day and Heffke’s Shutout

BRONX, N.Y. — The University of Chicago softball team closed out its road games on a high note Sunday morning, routing New York University 10–0 in a commanding shutout at Bahoshy Field. The Maroons rode an explosive offensive performance and stellar pitching from senior ace Paige Heffke and sophomore Alana Kimball to improve to 18–19 on the season.

UChicago wasted no time putting pressure on the Violets, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. After Sedona Ding reached on an error and advanced on a single by Madeline Murphy, Audrey Hui drove in the game's first run with a fielder's choice. Natalie Antin followed with a groundout that plated Murphy, and Hui later came home on a wild pitch to give the Maroons a quick 3–0 lead.

The bats stayed hot in the third. With runners on base, Matilda Nelson delivered a two-run single through the right side to extend the lead to 5–0. A few batters later, freshman Laila Sims brought in another run with a groundout to short, pushing the advantage to 6–0.

Nelson wasn't done. In the top of the seventh, after singles by Paige Zvokel and Katelyn Ohlde, Nelson stepped up and crushed a three-run homer to right field — her sixth of the season — blowing the game wide open at 9–0. Two batters later, Kate Bannister capped the scoring with an RBI single through the right side, bringing home Olivia Cataldo to make it 10–0.

Nelson finished 2-for-4 with five RBIs and a run scored, pacing a well-balanced UChicago offense that tallied 11 hits on the day. Murphy (2-for-3, 2 R), Cataldo (1-for-2, 2B, BB), and Hui (1-for-3, 2 R, RBI, SB) also contributed key performances. The Maroons were aggressive on the bases as well, swiping four total bags.

Meanwhile, Heffke (13–9) was in full control from the circle, tossing five shutout innings, scattering just two hits and striking out two without issuing a walk. Kimball came on in relief for the final two innings, fanning three and allowing no hits to complete the combined two-hit shutout.

The Maroons will now prepare for their final series as they take on Brandeis at home next weekend.
