ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The University of Chicago baseball team kicked off the 2016 season on Saturday in a neutral site game against Illinois Wesleyan University, ultimately absorbing a 3-0 loss.
Senior starting pitcher Lucas Friss (0-1) got the ball in the opener and pitched six strong innings. The right-hander only allowed one run in his stint on the mound. He struck out five batters and gave up eight hits. Friss was relieved by freshman Joe Liberman, who made his collegiate debut. Liberman hurled the final three innings, allowing two unearned runs with three hits, one walk and one strikeout.
UChicago's bats struggled to get going and were limited to four hits on the afternoon. Junior outfielder Nicholas Toomey provided half of that tally as part of his 2-for-4 performance at the plate. Junior shortstop Ryan Krob and junior first baseman Thomas Prescott each went 1-for-4.
IWU's pitchers worked efficiently all game. The Titans struck out 11 and did not walk any batters.
UChicago's defense made three errors on the day, which led to two unearned runs in the eighth inning.
