CHICAGO – The University of Chicago baseball team made its move late with a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't find the equalizer in a 4-3 defeat versus St. Norbert College on Friday.

The loss dropped the home team to 15-15 while improving the Green Knights to 19-13.

Senior third basemen Tim Sonnefeldt (2-for-4, RBI) and freshman catcher Ian Bohn (2-for-4, RBI) led the way for the Maroons as UChicago mustered 10 base runners (8 hits, 2 walks) against St. Norbert's pitching.

Sophomore pitcher Ricardo Fernandez started the game, going 4.1 innings with five hits, four runs (three earned), five strikeouts and three walks. Fernandez was hit with the loss to drop him to 1-1 on the season. Freshman pitcher Ravi Bakhai took over in the fifth, delivering 4.2 innings of outstanding relief work, shutting out the visitors while scattering three hits and striking out two.

The Maroons broke open the scoring in the bottom of the second. Sophomore first baseman Michael Davis singled deep into the hole on the left side of the infield, then stole second with Bohn up. The freshman then put runners at the corners with a single. The Green Knights traded a run for an out, as a Sonnefeldt ground ball gave the Maroons a 1-0 lead. The visitors escaped without further damage.

UChicago's lead was short lived at St. Norbert scored an unearned run in the third and added three tallies in the fifth to pull ahead 4-1. The Green Knights got eight innings from starting pitcher Blake Rutherford, who kept the Maroon offense in check while working efficiently to get outs.

Finally in the bottom of the ninth, UChicago's bats woke up. A leadoff walk chased Rutherford and freshman designated hitter Josh Parks greeted the reliever with a deep double that flew over the sprinting center fielder's head. Davis then knocked a diving fly ball to right center that looked sure to hit the ground. But a diving catch by the right fielder robbed Davis of extra bases and limited UChicago to one run on the sacrifice fly. Bohn was up next and he smacked a hard RBI single through the right side to cut the deficit to 4-3. However, a fielder's choice and a strikeout ended the game with the tying run on first base.
