AUBURNDALE, Fla. – After taking an early lead in the first inning, the University of Chicago baseball team had their bats silenced in an 8-3 loss to Fontbonne University on Thursday.
The Maroons dropped to 5-4 and the Griffins moved to 5-10.
Four of UChicago's eight hits on the day occurred in the opening inning. Sophomore outfielder Connor Hickey doubled out of the leadoff spot and moved to third base on junior outfielder Maximiliano Larsen's single. Sophomore catcher Ian Bohn drove in Hickey with a single. Two batters later, sophomore third baseman Brady Sarkon doubled in two runs to make it 3-0.
However, Fontbonne immediately struck back with three runs of its own in the top of the second. The Griffins then scored in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to pull away. Offensively, UChicago was limited to two hits over the final seven innings.
Sarkon (two RBI) and Hickey both went 2-for-4 at the plate. Larsen was 1-for-2 with two walks.
Freshman Nate Hendley (0-1 record) took the loss on the mound. He started the initial 5.2 innings, compiling seven runs (five earned), 10 hits, three walks and three strikeouts. Sophomore Ravi Bakhai hurled the next three innings with one run, five hits and three strikeouts. Junior Michael Davis earned the final out in relief.
