Maroon baseball finishes trip on high note with 9-5 win against Southern Maine

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The University of Chicago baseball team wrapped up its Florida spring trip with a 9-5 victory over University of Southern Maine on Sunday afternoon.

The Maroons improved to 8-4 and the Huskies dropped to 6-4.

Sophomore catcher Ian Bohn got his team off to a good start with a RBI double as the third batter of the game. The lead expanded to 3-0 in the top of the second. Sophomore shortstop Max Brzostowski singled one in while sophomore outfielder Connor Hickey laid down a squeeze bunt to score the runner from third base.

Southern Maine drew to within 3-2 before senior first baseman Thomas Prescott knocked a RBI single in the fifth. Then in the eighth, sophomore outfielder Josh Parks cranked a triple to lead off the frame. Three batters later, Brzostowski rounded the bases with his first collegiate home run.

Once again, the Huskies chopped into the lead in their half of the eighth, scoring twice to make it 6-4. But the Maroons kept their distance with three more in the ninth. With two outs, Parks tripled again to drive in two and freshman second baseman Payton Jancsy tallied a RBI single.

Junior pitcher Michael Davis (1.2 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 1 K) finished off the bottom of the ninth to earn the save. The winning pitcher was freshman Arno Curtis. The righthander threw four innings of relief with four strikeouts, two hits and no runs or walks allowed. Sophomore Joe Liberman started the game (3 IP, 2 R, 6 H, 1 K) and sophomore Alex McGimpsey (0.1 IP, 2 R, 1 H, 1 BB) also saw relief action.

UChicago finished with 12 hits and one error. Broztowski (three RBI) and Jancsy (one RBI) each went 3-for-4 at the plate. Parks (two RBI) and Prescott (one RBI) posted two hits apiece.
