SEGUIN, Texas – The University of Chicago baseball team dropped two games at Texas Lutheran Saturday in a road doubleheader, falling by scores of 8-3 and 8-5.
The Maroons concluded their Spring Break trip with a solid 5-3 record and return to action Saturday, March 31, in a twin bill at Illinois College.
TEXAS LUTHERAN 8, UCHICAGO 3
Texas Lutheran scored two runs in the first and built a solid lead, but the Maroons scored three runs in the top of the seventh in a late rally.
The Bulldogs (19-4) added to their total with a home run in the third and added one more score in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. UChicago didn't' give in, scoring three runs in the top of the seventh.
Maximiliano Larsen doubled to right field to score both Connor Hickey (single) and Brian Lyle (walk) and Ian Bohn added an RBI-single up the middle to score Larsen to make it a game, with the Maroons trailing, 4-3.
But Texas Lutheran would answer again, netting four runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a commanding 8-3 lead and let in just one hit after that to seal the Game 1 win.
Bohn finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and Larsen was 1-for-5 with two RBI and a double to lead the UChicago offense. Starter Jacob Petersen took the loss and relievers Zach Morochnik and Patrick Murphy each struck out two batters each.
TEXAS LUTHERAN 8, UCHICAGO 5
The Maroons fell behind early again in Game 2 and couldn't regroup in Saturday's nightcap.
The Bulldogs went up, 3-0 after two before UChicago responded with a run in the top of the fourth, as Connor Hickey scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-1. But Texas Lutheran's offense came alive again in the next three innings, as the hosts took an 8-1 advantage after seven.
The Maroons again would rally, plating four runs in the top of the eighth. Maximiliano Larsen's two-RBI single up the middle started the rally and he later scored on a Bulldogs' balk. Brady Sarkon's sacrifice fly scored Ian Bohn (single) completed the scoring, and Texas Lutheran didn't allow a hit in the ninth to seal Game 2.
Bohn and Payton Jancsy had two hits each to lead the Maroons and Larsen finished 2-for-4 with two RBI. The Maroons used six pitchers in the effort, as starter Joe Liberman took the loss, allowing three hits and three earned runs.
