CHICAGO – The University of Chicago baseball team used a total team effort in a game that featured 22 Maroons and eight different host pitchers in Thursday's 15-5 win over Edgewood College at J. Kyle Anderson Field.
Starter Zach Morochnik was credited with the win in his first-inning appearance, striking out two, and junior Connor Hickey led the way offensively with four hits, three RBI, and two doubles. Teammate Brady Sarkon added four hits and first-year James Kelly chipped in three RBI, with two hits and a double.
UChicago (16-7) trailed only briefly, as the visiting Eagles put two on the board in the top of the first inning. But the Maroons' offense was just getting started, answering with four runs in the bottom of the first frame.
Josh Parks (2-for-4, double) started the scoring with a RBI-single through the right side and teammate Payton Jancsy (2-for-4, two RBI) followed with another single to right field that scored two. Brady Sarkon's score on a wild pitch completed the inning's damage and gave the Maroons a lead they would not relinquish.
Edgewood (6-15) mustered another run in the third to trim UChicago's lead to one at 4-3, but the Maroons were looming with a huge third inning, where they would plate seven runs and bat around the order.
The Maroons' staff on the hill spread the wealth after that, as relievers Ravi Bakhai, Ricardo Fernandez (two strikeouts), Paul Chang (two strikeouts), Nate Hendley, Patrick Murphy (three strikeouts), Patrick Rogers (two strikeouts) and David Clarke combined with Morochnik to hold the Eagles to just eight hits and struck out 14.
UChicago scored one run in the fourth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh to complete its scoring.
Hickey added two stolen bases and scored twice and Sarkon was a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs scored for the Maroons.
Eagles starter Adam Eck took the loss for Edgewood and Bryan Sternig (RBI) and Nick Cheaney (two RBI) each had two hits to lead the visitors.
The nine-inning game lasted a total 3 hours and 14 minutes.
