KERRVILLE, Texas – The University of Chicago baseball team took both games of Sunday's doubleheader against host Schreiner University to rebound from an earlier loss and take the three-game series.

The Maroons (6-2) won by scores of 4-1 and 5-1 behind the arms of first-years Kyle Petri and Sam Bennett in two strong defensive performances.

UChicago continues action on its Spring Break trip with a single contest at Trinity (Tex.) Monday.

GAME 1: UChicago 4, Schreiner 1
First-year Kyle Petri continued his dominating collegiate start with his third win of the year, striking out 12 batters and allowing just three hits and an earned run in the complete-game effort.

Senior Brady Sarkon led the offense with two hits, scored twice and came up with the game-winning RBI, reaching on a fielder's choice error that plated teammate Payton Jancsy, who singled to lead off the seventh inning and the game tied at 1-all.

First-years Carson Weekley and Brett Rieger added RBIs later in the inning to add a couple of insurance runs for Petri, who took care of the bottom half of the inning to preserve the victory.

UChicago got on the board first in the second inning with the help of a leadoff Sarkon double to right field. With two outs, rookie Ben Rosengard came up with the RBI single to left to give the Maroons a 1-0 lead. The Mountaineers would answer in the third with their lone run of the game, courtesy of a Miguel Quinones double that scored Eric Sheffield (walk).

Seniors Connor Hickey and Ian Bohn, sophomore Brian Lyle and first-year Arian Tabibian added singles for UChicago.

GAME 2: UChicago 5, Schreiner 1
Maroons' rookie starter Sam Bennett tossed six solid innings to put UChicago in the driver's seat in another strong effort by the team's pitching staff in Sunday's 9-inning finale.

Bennett gave up just three hits, struck out seven, walked one and allowed just one earned run to set up the Maroon relievers, as Patrick Murphy, Ravi Bakhai and David Clark kept the scoreboard clean for the Mountaineers (9-15) the rest of the way.

Four Maroons tallied two hits apiece: Payton Jancsy, Ian Bohn, Josh Parks (RBI), and Brian Lyle each had two singles. Brady Sarkon recorded his second double of the day and walked three times, scoring twice, while Connor Hickey, Carson Weekley (two RBI), and Brett Riegler chipped in RBIs.

The Maroons scored a run in the fourth (via a Schreiner error), two more in the sixth (Sarkon led off that inning with a double), one in the seventh (Weekley RBI single) and one more in the ninth (Parks RBI sac fly). Schreiner netted its only score in the seventh.
