MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – The University of Chicago baseball team bounced back from a rough game one with stellar pitching in game two to split a doubleheader at Cornell College on Saturday.

The Maroons ran their record to 8-4. The Rams moved to 10-10.

Game One – Cornell 9, UChicago 3

A six-run second inning by the hosts broke the game open and UChicago could not recover. Play evened out after that frame, with each side putting up three runs over the next three innings.

A pair of errors pushed two Maroon runners across home plate in the top of the third. Junior outfielder Payton Jancsy's RBI groundout in the fifth accounted for the third tally. Cornell was held off the scoreboard for the last four innings.

Senior Brenton Villasenor (1-3 record) absorbed the loss in two innings of work. First-year Arian Tabibian (1.1 IP, 3 R), sophomore Chandler Yu (3.2 IP) and junior Nate Hendley (1 IP) all made relief appearances.

The Maroons were limited to six hits while making two errors. Senior catcher Ian Bohn went 2-for-4 at the plate, while Jancsy reached base three times.

Game Two – UChicago 4, Cornell 1

The nightcap featured a pitcher's duel for six innings as zeros filled the scoreboard. UChicago first-year pitcher Sam Bennett (2-0 record) mowed down the Rams throughout his start on the mound. The right-hander struck out 11 batters in 7.1 innings of work while only allowing one run on four hits and two walks. He tallied at least one strikeout in every inning.

With two outs in the top of the seventh, UChicago's offense made its move. A walk and a single set the stage for Bohn, who pulled a RBI single to left field to make it 1-0. Then in the eighth, sophomore shortstop Brian Lyle knocked a two-run single to center field to extend the lead to 3-0.

Cornell got one back in the bottom of the eighth, scoring on a wild pitch. But with two runners on, Lyle was able to turn an unassisted double play on a lineout to escape the threat.

Bohn added one more in the ninth for good measure by cracking a RBI double to left center.

UChicago tallied 11 hits in the game. Bohn went 3-for-5 with two RBI, Lyle was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Jancsy hit 2-for-5.

Junior Patrick Murphy tossed 0.2 innings of relief and sophomore David Clarke picked up the save in the ninth inning.
